China plans to build the most powerful solar power plant in the world

The Chinese state-owned energy company China Three Gorges Renewables Group will start construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of eight gigawatts in September 2024. It will be located in Ordos on a desert plateau in North China in the south of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, about 300 kilometers from Beijing.

To estimate the power of the future solar power plant, it is worth noting that the three largest solar power plants in the world power — these are China's Ningxia Tenggeli and Golmud Wutumeiren solar power plants with a capacity of three megawatts each, as well as a three-and-a-half gigawatt solar power plant in Urumqi (an urban district in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region).

Commissioning of a solar power plant in Ordos scheduled for June 2027.
