During a visit to France to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy, Zelensky met with American veterans. One of them embraced the Ukrainian president and called him “the savior of the people”.
This is reported by The New York Times.
As noted, a World War II veteran saw Volodymyr Zelensky and even tried to kiss his hand. Instead, the president bowed to the man and hugged him. This happened after the veteran heard that it was the president of Ukraine.
“You are the savior of the people,” 99-year-old Melvin Hurwitz, a veteran from Frederick, Maryland, told Zelensky after he embraced the Ukrainian leader. The veteran said that he brought tears to his eyes.
Zelensky emphasized in response to theveteran: “No, no, no, you saved Europe.” After why he knelt down next to him to take a picture.
Then the veteran added to Zelensky: “You are our hero”. To this the Ukrainian president answered him: < em>“No, you are our hero”.
After that, the two of them talked for some time, and their conversation was broadcast on a large screen that was installed on the territory , where memorable events took place.
