The United States and Turkey are discussing the purchase of Turkish explosives to increase the production of artillery shells in the United States. This is reported by analysts at the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
According to Bloomberg, the Pentagon has signed a contract with the American defense company General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems for the construction of three lines for the production of metal parts for 155-mm artillery shells .
The shells will be produced in Texas with Turkish subcontracts. The launch is scheduled for June 2024.
Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Doug Bush said in February that the United States will double the monthly production of 155-mm projectiles. In October 2023, production volume was 28 thousand shells per month and by October 2024 it should increase to approximately 60 thousand shells. But this is provided that Congress supports the bill for additional funding.
It is the import of Turkish explosives that will help the United States increase domestic production of ammunition.
