The Power of Touch: Why We Need Hugs

We live in an era of virtual communication, where real relationships are replaced by digital connections. We chat with friends, communicate with colleagues, meet new people – all this can be done without leaving home.

On the one hand, it is convenient and saves time. On the other hand – can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety and isolation. This is stated on the Psychological Support platform.

This is where hugs and other tactile sensations come to the rescue. It has been proven that touch has a powerful effect on our psychological and physical health. Here are just some of its benefits:

  • Reduced stress

When we are hugged, oxytocin is released in the body – a hormone that gives a feeling of peace and happiness. It helps reduce cortisol levels – stress hormone, which negatively affects our well-being.

  • Improving immunity

Research showed that people who hug regularly are less likely to get sick. This is because tactile contact stimulates the immune system.

  • Anxiety and loneliness disappear

Hugs give us a sense of unity with another person, a sense of security. It helps to overcome loneliness and anxiety.

  • Increasing self-esteem

When we are hugged, we feel loved and valued. It can help boost our self-esteem and improve our self-esteem.

Of course, the best source of tactile contact – these are close people:family, friends, loved one. But if you can't get a hug from them, there are other ways.

1. Professional massage – it is not only pleasant, but also good for health.

2. Dance or yoga classes. They provide an opportunity to touch other people, to feel their support.

3. Pets. Spending time with a cat or dog has also been proven to reduce stress levels and provide a sense of emotional closeness.

Alternatively, you can use soft and warm things to have a hug-like effect. Here are some examples:

  • Wrap up in a soft and fluffy plaid to feel warm and cozy.
  • Hug a big soft pillow, pretending it is a loved one.
  • A toy made of soft material (for example, a teddy bear) can also give a sense of comfort and security.
  • Wear soft and warm clothing (such as fleece pajamas, a cashmere sweater, or wool socks).

Of course, nothing can completely replace a human hug. However, using soft and warm things will help you feel more comfortable and calm.
