The level of counterfeiting of national currency banknotes according to the results of 2023 remained low. This is evidenced by the monitoring of the withdrawal of national currency banknotes from circulation in Ukraine for 2023.

According to the results of last year, there were about 2.1 counterfeit banknotes per 1 million genuine hryvnia banknotes (according to the results of 2022 – about 2.2 banknotes). This is stated on the website of the National Bank.

For comparison: according to the information of the European Central Bank, this indicator in the countries of the European Union in 2023 is almost eight times higher and amounted to approximately 16 euro banknotes (according to the results of 2022 – 13 banknotes).

Most often in 2023, old-style banknotes were counterfeited, in particular, the majority (93%) of counterfeits removed from circulation were banknotes of three denominations:

  • 200 UAH (61% of the total number of counterfeits removed and 41 % of their total amount);
  • 500 UAH (24% and 41%, respectively);
  • 100 UAH (8% and 3%, respectively).

Other counterfeit hryvnia banknotes removed from circulation accounted for only 7%.

As a result, according to the results of the 2023 monitoring, counterfeit hryvnia banknotes of the new model make up only 18% of the total number of counterfeits removed from the banking system of Ukraine. Accordingly, for every 1 million real hryvnia banknotes of the new model, the number of counterfeit ones was only 0.4. alt=”These are the bills that were most often counterfeited in 2023 – National Bank” />

The level of counterfeiting of currencies/National Bank

This is due to the enhanced protection system of the national currency banknotes of the new generation, in particular the high denominations of 100, 200 , 500 and 1,000 hryvnias, which the National Bank put into circulation in 2015-2020. To protect these banknotes, which most often attract the attention of criminals, innovative optically variable protection elements are used: they are easy for citizens to check, and extremely difficult for criminals to reproduce.
