Earlier today, we revealed that Dragon Ball Daima had made this notable change to the Dragon Balls, allowing us to learn more about how the famous crystal balls work. But it was also in episode 2 of the anime that fans were able to discover this little tribute to the late Akira Toriyama hidden in the opening.

A little tribute to Toriyama-sensei in the opening of Dragon Ball Daima

October 2024 marks the strong return of Dragon Ball, since fans of the franchise were not only treated to a new video game, namely Sparking! Zero, which was highly anticipated by fans of the Budokai Tenkaichi series, but also to a brand new anime.

Titled Dragon Ball Daima, this new anime takes place just after the Majin Boo Saga, and tells us how Goku and his friends were shrunk by Gomah, the new Demon King who succeeded Dabra. This marks the beginning of a new journey for our protagonists, who will have to venture into the mysterious Demon Kingdom that was still unknown until then.

The first two episodes of Daima have thus briefly introduced us to the new characters introduced in the anime, such as Gomah, but also Neva, Degesu, Dr. Arinsu and Glorio. And who says new anime, also says new opening and ending. And it was precisely in episode 2 released this week that fans were able to discover them.

Some observant fans then noticed that in the opening of Daima hides a small tribute to Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball. And indeed, it is in the lyrics of the title “Jaka Jaan” performed by Zed and C&K that we can distinctly hear the following phrases: “yumewa TORI dori”, “a YAMA nai” and “AKIRA menai”. Phrases which thus contain the characters allowing to spell the name of the late mangaka.

Because as a reminder, it was last March that the world learned of Toriyama's death. Many fans were therefore eagerly awaiting the release of Daima, on which the Japanese author himself had worked, and which is perceived by many as the last gift he offered to fans of the Dragon Ball universe.
