Apple has released a firmware update for AirPods and some Beats models that addresses a significant vulnerability in Bluetooth. This vulnerability could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to devices. Updates are available for the following models: AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Powerbeats Pro and Beats Fit Pro.
Latest firmware versions:
- AirPods Pro (2 generation) with MagSafe charging case (USB-C/Lightning): 6.5.8 (6F8)
- AirPods Pro (1st generation): 6A326
- AirPods (3rd generation ): 6A326
- AirPods (2nd generation): 6A326
- AirPods Max: 6A326
- AirPods (1st generation): 6.8.8
- Beats Fit Pro: 6F8
- Powerbeats Pro: 6F8
According to Apple, the updates fix an authentication issue that could have allowed an attacker in range Bluetooth, spoof a previously paired device and gain access. This issue has been resolved.
To check your AirPods firmware version, open your iPhone's settings, go to the "Bluetooth" section, find your AirPods, tap the "i" next to them and look at the “Firmware Version” number. Updates happen automatically as long as AirPods are charging and near a connected device over Wi-Fi.
