A “lone wolf” not associated with political groups is accused of the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Interior Minister Matus Šutai-Eštok said on Thursday, May 16, Reuters reports .
The left-wing populist leader was wounded in an attempt on his life after a cabinet meeting in the town of Gandlova.
Fico is in serious condition but is expected to survive, a spokesman said on Thursday hospitals.
Local TV channel TA3 reported that police detained the suspect on Wednesday. The next day he was charged with attempted murder.
Details about the suspect are not provided.
