On Friday, October 27, 2023, Zbigniew Ziobro, former Minister of Justice, published a sharp post on the X platform in which he criticized the leader of the opposition, Donald Tusk, and his associates.
“Today, all of Poland saw that Donald Tusk and his nominees are cowards who are afraid of the truth,” Ziobro declared. This statement took on particular significance in the context of events related to the parliamentary commission of inquiry into Pegasus.
On Friday, after giving an interview to Telewizja Republika, Ziobro was detained by police to be brought to a committee meeting. Despite this, the committee did not wait for his arrival and ended the meeting, voting in favor of a motion to place the former minister in 30 days of detention.
The latest events indicate a growing tension in Polish politics, which will certainly have further consequences for all parties involved in this case.
Just before 1:00 p.m., former Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro published a post on platform X that sparked a wave of comments and speculation. Describing his experience of being stopped by the Marshal's Guard before entering a committee meeting, Ziobro pointed to irregularities in the functioning of this body.
„When I arrived at the Sejm with the police, the Marshal's Guard stopped me, explaining that I had to wait to enter the committee meeting because 'it was still in the process and had to make a decision'– Ziobro reported. This event took place in the context of the work of the Pegasus Commission, which has been controversial since its inception.
Both Zbigniew Ziobro and the chairwoman of the commission, Magdalena Sroka, did not spare words of criticism towards political opponents. „The Constitutional Tribunal decided in September 2024 that the Pegasus Commission is illegal.” – stated the former Justice Minister. In his opinion, Donald Tusk and his nominees are „cowards” who avoid confronting the truth.
Magdalena Sroka, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of questioning a witness with key knowledge of the Pegasus system. “We don't want to play political theater” she emphasized during a conference after the committee meeting. In her opinion, Ziobro's actions are merely an attempt to divert attention from the essence of the case.
Sroka also announced that she would apply to the District Court in Warsaw to re-arrest the witness and place him in custody for 30 days for questioning. “Any other citizen who received a summons at a specific time would not be able to afford this type of behavior” – added.
It is worth noting that this situation raises questions about the limits of power and the responsibility of politicians towards society. Is Poland on the threshold of a new wave of political conflicts? How far will the current opposition go in the fight to reveal the truth?
Both the ruling camp and the opposition will now need cool blood and the ability to conduct a constructive dialogue instead of mutual accusations and theatrical stunts. Time will tell what consequences these events will bring for the Polish political scene and for Zbigniew Ziobro himself.
