Without communication and internet. GUR launched a large-scale attack on MegaFon

Ukrainian intelligence launched a large-scale disruption on “MegaFon” in Russia. Many Russians lost communication and internet.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to sources.

“Cyber specialists of the Main Intelligence Directorate carried out a large-scale cyberattack on the systems of one of the largest mobile and Internet operators in the Russian Federation, which is involved in the Russian aggression against Ukraine – the MegaFon company,” the sources said.

According to their data, as a result of the attack, throughout the day, Friday, January 24, the company's clients had problems with communication and the Internet.

In particular, since yesterday morning, residents of Moscow, St. Petersburg and many central regions of the Russian Federation began to complain about interruptions in mobile communication, the Internet, as well as the poor performance of many mobile services and applications.

Within a few hours in Roskomnadzor confirmed the failure. Later, Russian media named the real reason for the lack of communication and the Internet – a successful carpet DDoS attack on MegaFon.

The company itself stated that their network was supposedly working “normally”, but possible access problems allegedly occurred for reasons beyond their control.

Not only MegaFon

However, as it became known from sources in Ukrainian intelligence, the successful “carpet attack” disrupted the work of not only MegaFon.

This also affected operators communication and Internet “Yota”, “NetByNet”, and temporarily deprived Russians of access to Internet resources and services, such as Steam, Twitch, Discord, which are actively used by the Russian army and enemy intelligence services for aggression against Ukraine.

Not the first DDoS attack in Russia

It should be noted that Ukrainian intelligence agencies are not carrying out such attacks for the first time.
