Why you will not be able to connect a router to a regular power bank and what is needed for autonomous Internet

Ensuring uninterrupted access to the Internet has long been a priority task for many. Although using a power bank to support the operation of the router seems like a simple solution, not every power bank is suitable for this.

In order to avoid problems and ensure uninterrupted access to the Internet at home, several technical factors must be taken into account. Techno 24 explains, what you need to make your home internet non-volatile.

In practice, most routers do not work when connected to a regular power bank. To make sure that a particular model of power bank can support the operation of the router, you need to check the following:

  • Power consumption of the router: Different routers have different power requirements. You will need a power bank with enough power to meet the needs of your router. The standard voltage of the router can vary between 5V, 9V or 12V. A power bank with a capacity of at least 10,000 mAh is recommended for continuous use, especially if you also need to power a GPON subscriber terminal.
  • Cable compatibility: A special DC-to-USB cable is required to connect the power bank to the router. Make sure the cable has the correct connectors for both the router and the power bank to avoid compatibility issues.

To connect the router to the power bank, do the following:

  1. Make sure that the power bank has the appropriate output power and capacity for your router.
  2. Use the appropriate USB cable with the correct connectors.
  3. Connect one end of the cable to the router's power port, and the other – to the USB port of the power bank.
  4. Turn on the router and the power bank.
  • Avoid damaged or poor-quality cables: Using poor-quality cables may cause connection failures or damage to the device.
  • Do not overload the power bank: Make sure the device can handle your router's power consumption without overheating.
  • Remove the router from the charger when not in use: When the router is not in use, unplug it from power bank to save energy.
  • Unplug the device when power is restored: After the power supply is restored, don't forget to reconnect the router to a regular power source and charge the power bank if necessary.

Before buying a power bank for the router, make sure that your Internet connection is stable. For Ethernet connections, ISP equipment must have built-in batteries to keep the Internet running during outages.

Check with your ISP to see if their equipment is equipped with batteries, or consider installing GPON optical Internet, to keep your home connected.

While it is possible to use a power bank to keep your router running during a power outage, you must consider factors such as the router's power requirements, the power bank's capacity, and the cables required. With proper configuration, this solution can provide you with uninterrupted access to the Internet even during a power outage.
