On Wednesday, October 16, the US military carried out precision strikes on five fortified underground weapons depots in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. As US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reported, the strikes targeted facilities storing weapons components that the Houthis use to attack civilian and military vessels in the region.

The Pentagon chief noted that the operation involved B-2 Spirit stealth bombers.

“This was a unique demonstration of the United States' ability to strike targets that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried, hardened, or reinforced,” Austin said, emphasizing the strategic importance of the operation.

He also stressed that the strikes were authorized by US President Joe Biden to protect US forces and international shipping lanes in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden, which are vital to global commerce.

Austin condemned the Houthis for their attacks on US and other countries' ships over the past year, adding that the attacks endanger civilian lives, disrupt the free flow of commerce and threaten environmental disaster. He stressed that the US strikes are aimed at “weakening the Houthis' ability to continue their destabilizing behavior” and warned that the US will not hesitate to take action to protect its personnel and deter attacks against civilians and regional partners.

“We will continue to make clear to the Houthis that their unlawful and reckless attacks will not go unpunished,” – the head of the Pentagon said, reaffirming the US commitment to maintaining security in the region and protecting freedom of navigation.
