China is making a “big mistake” by supporting Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine by providing technology for missiles and other weapons, US Ambassador to Beijing Nicholas Burns said.

Speaking in Shanghai, Burns also said the Russian invasion, now in its third year, had caused an “existential crisis” in Europe, reports  Associated Press agency.

"We consider it a big mistake that thousands of Chinese companies are sending so many components, technological parts, microprocessors and nitrocellulose to Russia to strengthen the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation for this brutal war"– said the diplomat.

"China is not neutral, but actually sided with Russia in this war,", – the ambassador said.

This, he said, directly contradicts China's long-standing statements about the need to respect “sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

China insists it is not providing direct military assistance Russia.

However, Beijing has maintained strong trade ties with Moscow throughout the conflict, and Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping exchange visits.
