The BBC has been under pressure for several years.

Under strong budgetary pressure, the BBC will examine different options for reforming the license fee, its main source of funding, from 2028, indicated Tim Davie, director general of British public broadcasting, on Tuesday.We will proactively look at how to reform the levy after 2028, look at its scale, how it could be more progressive and ensure its application is fair and proportionate.

An essential institution in the British audiovisual landscape, the BBC celebrated its centenary in full doubt a year ago, tormented by competition from paid platforms and by threats to its public funding, which is regularly called into question.

More recently, the group had to face two years of royalty freezes despite high inflation.

This is particularly problematic when solid accounts and the ability to deploy capital strategically are essential if we want to negotiate the digital transition, he added, judging the fact of having reduced BBC funding in such a context.

These pressures have led the BBC to implement significant reforms and cuts over the past three years , reducing the workforce by 1,800 people and more than 1,000 hours of content, including popular programs, he noted.

As well as implementing a plan to save £500 million (C$858 million) each year, the BBC is working on a plan to reduce an additional £200 million (C$343 million) primarily deployed to ensure we can deliver enough impactful content and secure investment in digital products.

Tim Davie, however, did not mention plans to introduce advertisements on audio content such as shows broadcast as podcasts on private platforms.
