Ukrainian innovators from Kyiv conquered NASA: victory at the Space Apps Challenge

The team from the State University «Kyiv Aviation Institute» won the prestigious NASA International Space Apps Challenge hackathon, receiving an award in the Galactic Impact category.

Their project, the NVS-knot application, uses satellite and hydrological data to make effective decisions in agriculture.  

What is known about the NASA hackathon

NASA International Space Apps Challenge – is a global event that brings together developers, scientists, designers, innovators and technologists. Participants solve challenging problems within 48 hours using open data from NASA and partners.  

Ukrainian innovators became one of the ten winning teams among 15 thousand participants from 185 countries. The NVS-knot project impressed the jury with its ability to help in making agricultural decisions through the use of modern technologies.  

Global winners of 2024

The Ukrainian team joined the list of the best, along with representatives of Canada, Brazil, Spain, Egypt and other countries. NASA recognized the winners in 10 categories, including «Best Use of Science», «Global Connectivity», «Best Use of Technology» etc.  

The award ceremony for the winners, including the NVS-knot team, will be held at NASA headquarters.  

Space for Innovation

The goal of the hackathon is to support collaboration between specialists from different fields and develop creative approaches to solving problems on Earth and in space. In total, over 373 thousand people participated in the event over the years at 2800 local events.  

The organizer of the Space Apps Challenge is NASA in cooperation with such partners as the Australian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Indian Space Research Organization, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency and others.  

The Ukrainian team demonstrated that innovation and technological breakthroughs are an integral part of our country's future in the world.
