Tron 3: Jared Leto freewheels on set

Jared Leto is famous for his eccentricities. Often, on film sets, the actor has more or less rational whims to help him get into the skin of his characters. Currently filming Tron: Ares, Jared Leto has been up to his old tricks again.

Jared Leto and his eccentricities

At 52 years old, Jared Leto is a fulfilled artist. Singer, musician, producer, actor, he has a bit of everything and is a prominent Hollywood figure of the 21st century.Jared Leto is an actor famous for his eccentricities. Often, to get into his characters, he uses unorthodox methods, sometimes even downright destabilizing.

For example, like Christian Bale, Jared Leto is famous for his excessive weight loss. For Requiem for a Dream (2000), he lost 12 kilos, refused to see his friends and stopped having sex to better understand his character's identity. In Dallas Buyers Club (2013), he lost about twenty kilos to play a transgender woman with AIDS. But Jared Leto goes even further than Christian Bale. Like Shia LaBeouf, Jared Leto sometimes approaches his roles in a totally what the fuck way.

For Suicide Squad (2016), he sent his colleagues strange and creepy gifts to enter the Joker's mind. For example, Margot Robbie had the unpleasant surprise of receiving a dead rat, while Will Smith received bullets. In Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Leto wore contact lenses to actually be blind during the filming of Denis Villeneuve. Similarly, on the set of Morbius(2022), the actor insisted on walking with crutches throughout production, to be closer to his character.

In short, filming with Jared Leto is always an experience in itself. At the moment, he is working on the filming of Tron: Ares, the third installment of the franchise. And unsurprisingly, his acting methods are once again unconventional to say the least. In fact, Jared Leto applies a method that is quite well-known in Hollywood: the Actors Studio. This is a method that became popular in the middle of the 20th century. This technique consists of remaining completely in the skin of one's character, and this throughout the entire filming, even during breaks. Shia LaBeouf, Christian Bale, Jim Carrey, Joaquin Phoenix and Jared Letoare probably the best ambassadors.

Jared Leto on the set of Tron 3

Directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), this third Tron will be part of the continuity of the saga. For the occasion, in addition to Jared Leto in the lead role, Jeff Bridgeswill return for a third time in the franchise, more than forty years after the first installment. During an appearance on the podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe, Jeff Bridges commented on his experience with Jared Leto:

I had never met him before. I was like, “How's this going to go?” because he's also a producer on the movie, a huge fan of the original, and he's been working on Ares for 10 years. I came in and, you know, every set has a different vibe. There was a weird vibe on this one. I said, “How's Jared? How's he working?” “He's doing great. You know, his character's name is Ares, so we have to call him that,” and I said, ” Oh, interesting.

A method that Jeff Bridges does not apply at all. Unlike Jared Leto, he likes to get out of character during breaks, and connecting with his co-workers:

When the directors cut, we would chat among ourselves, about anything and everything. But not Jared. His name was Ares in the movie, and I ended up saying, “Hey, Air, how's it going, man?” I said, “Is it okay if I call you Air?” And he said, “Yeah, sure, you can.” Then we relaxed, and it was just wonderful. You know, we adjusted what.

Not much is known about Tron: Ares at this point. We just know that the story will focus on a new character named Ares. The film is expected to depict the collision between the real world and the Grid of Tron. The feature film is expected to hit theaters on October 8, 2025.
