This cult film from the 2000s is going to be remade and it looks great.

When it was released in theaters in 2000, this film mixing horror and black comedy generated more than $34 million in worldwide box office revenue on a budget of $7 million. While the production divided critics, it has established itself as a cult work over the years. Today, we learned that it's getting a new version at Lionsgate and that a director is about to join the project.

A controversial work that has become a cult film

In 2000, the adaptation of a bestseller that would become a classic and will be considered one of the best films of all time was released on our screens. If we talk to you about Patrick Bateman? The first idea that comes to mind is American Psycho! Directed by Mary Harron, this film is the adaptation of the novel written by Bret Easton Ellis published in 1991 with Christian Balein the role of a Wall Street golden boy who evolves in the middle of the Reagan years. Bateman is misogynistic, homophobic and racist and hides a psychopathic personality that pushes him to commit inhuman murders. It is also in this production that Christian Bale offers the public his first impressive physical transformation.

A “sequel”, American Psycho 2 was released directly on DVD and was not unanimously acclaimed. In 2011, rumors circulated that Lionsgate, which held the rights to the work, was preparing a remake, but nothing came of it. Two years later, a series project was announced without it seeing the light of day.

American Psycho gets a new adaptation and a new director

Earlier this year, insider Jeff Sneider, who is often well-informed, announced that Lionsgate is looking to produce a modern reboot of American Psycho and is trying to find a screenwriter. Today, the studio is actually moving forward quite quickly on this project because according to information from Deadline, the project has already found a screenwriter with Scott Z. Burns and will be produced by Frenesy Films.

In addition, Lionsgate would be on the verge of finding the director who will take the reins of the project in the person of Luca Guadagnino. The studio and the Italian director are in the final stages of negotiations. Note that it will not be a remake of the Marry Harron film but rather a new adaptation of the novel.

The director of Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name is considered as an elite filmmaker and if he was chosen it is because he “is a brilliant artist and the ideal visionary to create a completely new interpretation of this powerful classic of intellectual property“.

We are following the project closely and we will not hesitate to keep you informed of its progress.
