The United States has imposed visa restrictions on more than 250 Nicaraguan government officials and also imposed sanctions on three Nicaraguan organizations in response to the "repressive actions" and failure to stop the smuggling of migrants through the country.
Senior administration officials told reporters that the visa restrictions included police and paramilitary officials, prosecutors, judges and employees of public universities, Reuters reports.
< p>At the same time, the Departments of State, Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a joint statement informing airlines and travel agencies that networks of smugglers and human traffickers are using legitimate transportation services to facilitate illegal migration into the United States through Nicaragua.
< p>"The actions of the Nicaraguan authorities are of grave concern. President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosalio Murillo have introduced a deliberately permissive migration policy"– stated the US Department of Homeland Security.
