The Sikorsky company will create unmanned Black Hawk attack helicopters for the Pentagon

The Sikorsky aircraft company received a grant from the US Department of Defense to convert the UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter into an unmanned one. Six million dollars were provided to the enterprise for the purpose, writes Interesting Engineering.

Sikorsky, which is a component of the Lockheed Martin arms concern, will install the ALIAS/MATRIX autonomous flight system on a rotorcraft. Thanks to the on-board equipment of the so-called “robotic brain”, Black Hawk is expected to be autonomous as early as 2025. commanders the flexibility to perform complex tasks in intense combat conditions, day and night, in any weather,” commented Sikorsky CEO Rich Benton.

This July, Sikorsky together with the Agency for Advanced the US Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has already demonstrated to US soldiers and Pentagon officials how operators can easily control a Black Hawk helicopter from the cockpit or from the ground using a tablet. 

In addition to equipping the helicopters with a “robotic brain next year, next-generation engines will also be installed in them. 

As you know, the Sikorsky company, founded by the Ukrainian aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky, designs and manufactures airplanes and helicopters. Since November 2015, it has been part of the American  Lockheed Martin, which formerly belonged to United Technologies Corporation.
