The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone turned out to be better than its competitors: experts named 5 reasons

Even if the Galaxy S25 Edge ends up being “just” a thinner Galaxy S25, that might be enough to attract buyers.

The Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone will likely be the main competitor to the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, writes Android Police.

Ahead of last week's Unpacked presentation, almost everyone expected something like the “Galaxy S25 Slim,” which would match the product that Apple is preparing for the fall. Instead, the S25 Edge relies on a name that Samsung hasn't used in almost 10 years.

Of course, it could be argued that the “Edge” brand never really caught on, lasting just a few years in the mid-2010s until Samsung adopted curved displays for the entire Galaxy S8 lineup. But the AP's Slack reaction to the name reveal suggests that there are Android fans who remember and love the Edge series. Samsung is clearly focused on making the Galaxy S25 Edge's body as thin and sleek as possible, and with that weight reduction comes weight reduction.

Speaking of Apple, it's hard not to see the Galaxy S25 Edge as anything other than a response to the yet-to-be-released iPhone 17 Air. Rumor has it that this ultra-thin iPhone is set to arrive this fall alongside its other iPhone 17 siblings, but the Galaxy S25 Edge will be a few months ahead of it, launching in the spring. Such a head start — great news for Samsung, giving it a chance to get ahead of the debate about whether it's copying Apple, while also giving it a chance to really push forward in hardware for the first time in years.

Even if the Galaxy S25 Edge ends up looking like “just” a thinner Galaxy S25, that might be enough to entice buyers. It's certainly a modern Samsung phone, but the new body and limited number of lenses don't promise anything fundamentally new.

Virtually all Galaxy S25 devices run One UI 7, enabling Galaxy AI to function, which makes the gadgets better in many ways than their predecessors, providing a multitude of apps, reorganized quick settings, and tools like the Now Bar and Now Brief.
