Warning, the following article contains SPOILERS about the plot of the seventh episode of season 2 of Rings of Power. If you haven't seen it yet, we strongly advise you to stop reading now.
In July, the culmination of their promotional campaign, the showrunners of Rings of Powerlet loose the horses to present their season 2 in style. After the presentation of Tom Bombadil and the Spirits of the Mounds, JD Payne and Patrick McKay revealed to us that a major battle would animate a good part of the current season: the battle of Eregion spread over several episodes over “several days, weeks, months and episodes” promised Patrick McKay.”The battle of darkness against light, with some very dark and quite violent moments,” added production manager Charlotte Brändström
It is indeed the siege of Adar and his forces on the city of Celebrimbor that we are talking about. The conflict awaited by the spectators has indeed started this Thursday, September 26 on Prime Video. A godsend, because let us remember that one of the main criticisms made by the fans at the end of the first season was precisely this cruel lack of a good big battle. In episode 8, Adar and the Orcs try to push open the gates of the elven city of Eregion, home of the blacksmith Celebrimbor manipulated by Sauron (in the guise of Annatar). The images are frankly beautiful, and the production is careful.
< p>Interviewed by GamesRadar+On the making of the Siege of Eregion, showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne say that their version took a year of planning to bring to the screen.
The Siege of Eregion is the big climax of Season 2. It starts in Episode 6, goes through Episode 7, and goes through Episode 8, and each sequence is a different phase of that battle. Siege battles happen historically, not over the course of a night or a day, but over months, and we wanted you to feel the weight of that, we wanted you to feel the different layers of each of those battles.”It's not just action for the sake of action,” he continues. “It's not three episodes of continuous action. It's a three-episode battle that's packed with emotion. There are incredible performances. All of our storylines and characters kind of come together.”
To spread out their battle, the showrunners actually used several cuts. While the city is under siege, Celebrimbor, disconnected from reality, is still locked in his tower. A sort of mental prison created by a spell cast by Sauron. The arrival of the Elven troops led by Elrond also marks a break with the siege of the Orcs. He must negotiate the rescue of Galadriel, held by Adar. The future lord of Foncdombe demonstrates his skill in combat and his status as commander. A performance that Patrick McKay does not fail to highlight.
This season, Elrond goes from being a politician to becoming a warrior and a general, and if you know anything about the story, the results are ultimately tragic. Robert Aramayo's performance is absolutely spectacular and moving, and we can't wait for people to see it. So it's an epic performance that took a year of planning and preparation and several weeks of filming. But I hope it's quite moving and even intimate at times when you strap in and watch. »
Several actors in the series, such as Owain Arthur (Durin III) and Sophie Nomvete, who plays Disa, speak of a long sequence that is «epic» and «haunting». However, one can only regret that the conflict does not gain more in intensity. Where one hoped for an assault by the Elven horsemen on the Orcs as Peter Jackson knew so well how to do when he staged the charge of the Rohirrim in The Two Towers, the fireworks ultimately turn into a damp squib. when Elrond and his men stop dead in front of their enemies. A real frustration.
The battle will therefore continue in the final episode of the season, which we hope Prime Video will be able to provide the climax necessary to satisfy viewers and conclude the series in style.
