The condition of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who received gunshot wounds as a result of an assassination attempt on May 15 in the city of Gandlova, remains serious but stable. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the country Robert Kalinyak, Radio Liberty reports.

According to Kalinyak, nothing threatens Fico’s life. However, transporting the prime minister from the hospital in Banska Bystrica to Bratislava is not yet possible. In addition, according to doctors, Fico will need a lot of time for rehabilitation.

Kaliniak stressed that during the recovery period of the Prime Minister, Slovakia must continue to function normally.

In the case of the assassination attempt Fico arrested 71-year-old writer and political activist Juraj Cintula. On May 15, he was among a small group of residents whom Fico came out to greet after a government meeting. In total, the attacker fired five shots at close range. Three bullets hit the prime minister.

Tsintula explained his motives by disagreement with government policy. The Slovak Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that the writer, among other things, did not agree with the suspension of military assistance to Ukraine.

Tsintula admitted guilt. He faces 25 years in prison to life imprisonment.

  • Fico is considered a politician who causes controversy and disagreement both within the country and abroad, including in the European Union, because of his calls stop military aid to Ukraine and refrain from sanctions against Russia. At the same time, statements condemning the attempt on his life and wishing him a speedy recovery came from everywhere.
