The Hunt for Gollum: Ian McKellen shares inside scoop on Andy Serkis' film

After playing Gollum in Peter Jackson's trilogy and also in the Hobbit trilogy, Andy Serkis will move to the other side of the camera by directing the next film in the Lord of the Rings universe, The Hunt for Gollum scheduled for 2026. If two films had been announced, we can count on Ian McKellen, the actor who plays Gandalf, to share with us some valuable information and details about the project.

Lord of the Rings fans will be treat

It can be said that the film project produced by Peter Jackson is quite vague … What we do know is that J.R.R. Tolkien fans will have the chance to discover on the big screen in 2026 a new film of The Lord of the Rings entitled The Hunt for Gollum. Before that, they will be able to see the animated feature film The War of the Rohirrim which is scheduled for release in theaters on December 11. On the plot side, the producer had revealed that The Hunt for Gollum will focus on the personality of Sméagol/Gollum as well as his journey which spans a period of 18 years ….

The adaptation is likely to be complicated, to say the least. We knew that two new Lord of the Rings films had been announced, but no one knew if these two productions would tell independent story arcs. For more details, we can count on Ian McKellen, the essential interpreter of Gandalf to offer them to us.

Ian McKellen Spills Some Valuable Details About The Hunt for Gollum

Indeed, in a recent interview, the actor tried to give us some details about this very secret project. Thus, for This Morning, McKellen declared:

I was told there would be two movies. I probably shouldn't say this, but I haven't read the script, I don't know when it's coming out, and I don't even know where it's going to be filmed.

The actor had made no secret of his desire to return as Gandalf in this upcoming Lord of the Rings project. But now, even though we don't know if he'll be in it, Ian McKellen announces that The Hunt for Gollum could therefore be split into two parts. It wouldn't be surprising if this were the case since the franchise has already done it with The Hobbit films. The other question that fans may ask is the interest of offering two chapters for this story.

In The Community of the Ring, at the Council of Elrond, Aragorn said that there was “not much need to tell” what he experienced while hunting Gollum. A line that suggests that there would not be enough content to produce two parts. Let's hope that with Jackson producing, Serkis directing and as Gollum and McKellen returning, this trio will give us a great show.
