The Google Pixel 9 smartphone may get an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner

Google plans to significantly improve the unlocking system in the new Pixel 9 line of smartphones by introducing an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. This may be the answer to many years of user complaints about the operation of under-screen scanners in previous models.

According to information published by 9to5Google with reference to Android Authority, the new Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones will have an ultrasonic scanner installed Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 fingerprint sensor. This will be a significant improvement over the optical sensors used in the current Pixel models.

Ultrasonic technology uses sound waves to create a three-dimensional image of the fingerprint, providing higher accuracy and unlock speed. The advantage is especially noticeable when working with wet fingers. By the way, a similar sensor is already used in the flagship model Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The new scanner has a surface area increased by 77% compared to the previous generation, which facilitates finger positioning and allows processing in 1.7 times more than biometric data.

It is worth noting that Google did not switch to ultrasonic technology for a long time, despite numerous complaints from users about optical scanners, especially when using protective films on the screen. As a temporary solution, the company implemented universal face unlock in the Pixel 8, but this feature has limitations when working in low-light conditions.

The introduction of an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in the Pixel 9 is expected to significantly improve the experience of using the device and increase his safety. Official confirmation of this information has not yet been received from Google.
