London has no plans to ban the TikTok social network, the British government said on Saturday.
“This topic is for the US, we have no plans to ban TikTok in the UK,” the EFE agency quoted a Downing Street representative as saying.
This statement came amid the US consideration of the issue of banning this social network, which is based in the PRC. US President-elect Donald Trump said on Friday that he would make a decision on TikTok's fate after analyzing the situation.
“I will make a decision on TikTok in the near future, but first I need to understand the situation,” he wrote on the social network Truth Social. Trump noted that the Supreme Court's decision was expected and should be respected.
Earlier it was reported that the US Supreme Court unanimously supported the federal law banning the TikTok application. At the same time, the White House said that it would transfer the final decision on the ban on the social network to the next administration. The bill provided that the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, should abandon it; otherwise, the platform was planned to be banned in the United States.
Western media then noted that the approval of the bill would allow the US president to ban other applications controlled by “foreign rivals”. TikTok has gained immense popularity over the past few years. According to the American authorities, the Chinese authorities may use the application to collect personal data of Americans. TikTok has about 170 million users in the United States.
