Technical characteristics of the innovative Al Fulk amphibious assault ship revealed

Fincantieri has handed over to Qatar the latest amphibious assault ship Al Fulk. It has unique technical characteristics that allow it to perform a wide range of tasks, from amphibious operations to ballistic missile defense.

It is reported that on November 29, 2024, Fincantieri officially handed over the LPD «Al Fulk» to the Ministry of Defense of Qatar.

«Al Fulk» has a length of 143 meters, a width of 21.5 meters and a displacement of 8 800 tons, which allows it to be a versatile platform for various missions.

The ship is equipped with two Wärtsilä 12V32 diesel engines, which provide a power of 12 000 kW (16 000 hp). This allows it to reach a maximum speed of 20 knots and has a range of 7,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 15 knots.

One of the ship's main features is the presence of a continuous helicopter deck, which has two landing pads – one at the bow and the other at the stern.

«Al Fulk» is capable of operating up to three NH90 helicopters and has a hangar for their maintenance and storage. The ship is also equipped with a spacious garage with two ramps for quick unloading of equipment and an internal dock capable of launching landing craft.

An important characteristic is the ability to perform air defense and ballistic missile defense operations.

The ship is equipped with modern sensors and weapons, including the Leonardo Kronos Power Shield radar for long-range reconnaissance and missile detection, as well as two SYLVER A50 vertical launch systems for launching Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles.

In general, the ship can perform a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance, force projection, maritime security, and others.
