Taken from real life. “Mother-in-law doesn't understand why she's being treated badly”: She doesn't understand, even though she keeps blackmailing us with an apartment

The mother-in-law is now blinking in surprise and doesn't understand why her daughter-in-law doesn't love her and treats her like a stranger.

She doesn't see any indication of this in her behavior at all, and the fact that she's been blackmailing us with the apartment for two years is probably not a reason. And interestingly, it's not even entirely hers.

This apartment was left to me by my husband's grandmother, and she and my mother-in-law inherited it in equal parts. My mother-in-law has her own two-room apartment, but she didn't give up the inheritance to her son, she decided to become the owner of half.

If she didn't constantly use the fact of ownership to blackmail us, we wouldn't have any complaints, but we've had enough of her. My husband and I moved into this apartment after we got married. My mother-in-law assured us that there would be no problems with it, that we could consider it our apartment, and we believed her. It wasn't very smart of us, but I didn't know my mother-in-law very well, and my husband didn't expect any ceremony from his mother.

As for re-registering her share, my mother-in-law said that when her grandchild or granddaughter is born, she will give her share to the child. But she always emphasized that it was just a formality, we can consider the apartment ours, she won't interfere, there's no need for that, she has her own.

We did something wrong, and she started blackmailing us with the apartment:

-You forgot that I own half of this place? I can rent one of the rooms or even sell it – my mother-in-law hissed. We didn't expect a blow from this side, so we didn't know how to react to such a move. Later, the topic died down by itself, relations improved, but the residue remained. Since then, my mother-in-law has made it a rule to immediately mention the apartment, which is also hers, and how it could ruin our lives.

Our relationship quickly changed from good family relations to neutrality. I was simply disappointed with this woman and did not want to communicate with her, and my husband was seriously offended with his mother.

While before he could run to her for tea, talk, help with something, now he began to avoid her company, make excuses and try to limit contact to a minimum.

My mother-in-law thinks she is not doing anything special and is right everywhere, we were planning to have a child soon, but now that we have such a problem with the apartment, we have a problem with the mortgage. We don't know what our mother-in-law will come up with and how she will decide to make our lives more difficult.
