Of course I thought it only happens on TV shows, but it turns out it happens in real life too.

“Come on, pack up,” said Alicja, my mother-in-law, unexpectedly appearing at 8:00 p.m. “Daniel and Janka are coming with their grandchildren tomorrow.” My mother-in-law is a woman who knows how to have fun, but not to this extent… Even my husband was surprised.

“You'll stay with the matchmakers or rent a hotel,” Alice replied, as if in a prepared sentence. I tried to find out more about what my mother-in-law had come up with this time, but she, seeing my growing nervousness, suggested that I get some dog sedative. It turned out that my brother-in-law was returning with his wife and children from abroad after years of living abroad.

My mother-in-law announced that Daniel was returning with everyone, so we had to give up the apartment to them, because theirs was too small. Yes, that division was visible again… My husband Krystian had always been second only to Daniel in my parents' hearts, and over time his wife and their children also came before us. I don't know where this attitude comes from, since both brothers graduated from the same university, found similar-looking wives, except that I don't put my family in debt by taking out short-term loans to the very bottom of my budget…

Taking care of the house, shopping, the father-in-law's car, and even hospital shifts, of course, were not equivalent to annual postcards from Europe and video greetings. My husband never expressed his complaints to his parents and had no grudge. Krystian considered them a normal family and did not notice any absolute favoritism.

I felt very sorry for him, so I decided to be the bad guy in this story.

-So — I told my mother-in-law — we're not going anywhere. How do you imagine that? I'm packing up two kids and a dog, and we're going somewhere because of your favorite son?

-I didn't ask your permission – my mother-in-law said, and turned to her son. –

-No, mom – my husband said firmly. -This is too much – my mother-in-law gave him an unpleasant look.

-When I gave you the money for this apartment, it wasn't too much – she said sarcastically. Krystian got up from the table and went to our room.

– Fine, live at our expense, ungrateful people! – said my mother-in-law and went into the hallway. At that moment my husband returned, holding a roll of money.

– Here, mom, take this – said my husband, holding out a pile of money. I would have done it myself a long time ago, but she's my husband's mother, so I tried not to interfere in their relationship. My mother-in-law took the money and spat at our feet as she left the apartment. I sympathized with my husband, that's why I supported him in every difficult decision…
