Taken from life. “My brother caused a huge scandal at my father's funeral”: He thought my father liked me more

The church was quiet.

My father's funeral was supposed to be a time of farewell, a moment of reflection on his life and our memories. He was a good man – quiet, hard-working, always caring for us. Although he didn't show his feelings directly, I knew he loved me and my brother Krzysztof. Or so I thought.

The church was silent. The coffin rested in the middle, surrounded by flowers. The priest spoke about his father, about his life of sacrifice and love for his family. The crowd was filled with emotion – my mother, relatives, even neighbors were crying. I stood next to my brother, trying to stay calm, although inside I felt everything inside me breaking.

When the time came to say goodbye, I approached the coffin to lay the flowers. I gently placed the rose down and whispered, “Thank you for everything, Dad.” But before I could turn around, I heard Krzysztof's voice behind me. A voice full of anger.

“Don't pretend you cared about him so much!” he exclaimed. Everyone froze, and I felt the blood drain from my face. I turned to him, looking at him in shock. “What are you doing?” I whispered, trying to control the situation.

„You were always the favorite, weren't you?– he continued, ignoring the stares of the guests. „You were always the perfect daughter. And I? I was nothing! Even now, everyone looks at you like you're the mourning queen!”

“This is not the place or time for such things” – I tried to calm him down, but his words were like an avalanche.

– Don't pretend you didn't know– he spoke louder and louder, pointing his finger at me. –Dad always loved you more. He always had time for you, and I had to fight for every look he gave me! Even now, in his will, he probably left everything to you!”

Whispers and nervous commotion could be heard in the church. Mother tried to calm him down, but Krzysztof had no intention of stopping. “I've felt like someone inferior all my life,– he added, his voice laced with pain and anger. “And now, even in death, my father has taken away what I should have had, – peace.”

I looked at him, not knowing what to say. I didn't want our family grievances to come out at a time like this. “Krzysztof, that's not true,” I said quietly, trying to hold back my tears. “Dad loved us both. He may not have always shown it directly, but I know he did.”

“Don't pretend you know it better than me!” he shouted back. His words were full of bitterness that I couldn't understand.

Finally, my mother, though shaken, stood up and said: „Enough of this, Krzysztof. This is not the place for such things. Your father loved you both, but you never saw it, because you were always busy with jealousy.” Her voice was full of pain, but also decisive. After these words, Krzysztof fell silent, although I could see in his eyes that he was not convinced.

The funeral ended in a tense atmosphere. After the ceremony, I tried to talk to Krzysztof, but he left without a word, leaving me with questions to which I found no answers. Did he really feel rejected all his life? Was my relationship with my father such a huge thorn in his side?

Today, looking back, I know that my father's love was real, although not always equally shared in the eyes of both of us. But the greatest pain is knowing that the brother I love left with such bitterness in his heart. And that we may never find our way back to each other.
