Switzerland: Tamedia press group to cut around 290 jobs

DR La Tribune de Genève

The Swiss press group Tamedia announced on Tuesday that it would cut some 290 jobs, including around 200 positions at within the printing works and 90 positions within the editorial offices, to accelerate its digital transformation.

“By adopting this new strategy, the company is adapting to the rapid evolution of media consumption, but also to the changes brought about by large technology companies in the advertising market,” it said in a press release.

Tamedia, which owns the Tages-Anzeiger and Tribune de Genève newspapers, among others, intends to close its Lausanne printing site at the end of March 2025 and its Zurich site at the end of 2026.

“In recent years, printing companies have experienced overcapacity situations that no longer allow three businesses to be operated profitably,” the group explained.

The Bern printing works will be expanded, however, in order to guarantee Tamedia “long-term production for its own titles as well as for external customers”. And all of Tamedia's “print” brands will continue to exist.

This plan is accompanied by “the elimination of around 200 full-time positions in the printing works and probably 90 positions in the editorial offices, subject to the results of the consultation procedures”, says Tamedia, adding that social plans with early retirement options will be implemented.

“We want to be at the forefront of the digital world in terms of quality journalism. In doing so, we will continue to contribute in our own way to the freedoms that a democratic society needs”, said Tamedia's managing director, Jessica Peppel-Schulz, quoted in the press release.
