Super Mario Bros: 12 dream characters for the second film

Following the phenomenal box office success of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, Nintendo has announced that the second installment will hit screens on April 3, 2026. Although the details regarding the plot of Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2 remain a mystery, it seems that we could find some lesser-known characters from the Mario universe there.

The infinite wealth of Nintendo lore

During an interview, Keegan-Michael Key, who lends his voice to Toad, declared: “We will discover new characterswho are emblematic figures of the past, as well as others who, in my opinion, are real forgotten nuggets, but who, due to the current turn of history, will prove particularly fascinating. “

But what characters is he talking about? Between “old emblematic figures” and “forgotten nuggets”, the field of possibilities is vast.Especially since with several dozen games that have enriched the lore of the famous plumber, as well as the possible interactions with other Nintendo titles via the universe of Super Smash Bros, everything now seems possible. Here are 12 characters that we would like to see appear in Super Mario Bros. – The Movie 2 when it is released!

#12 The Marto Brothers

Their name alone is already quite a program. These Koopas have been the nightmare of players since the very first Super Mario Bros. As their name suggests, they are Koopa Troopas who throw hammers. Most of the time, they are accompanied by one of their peers, and It's a real headache for the beginner player to understand their routine and to manage to pass between their projectiles. On the other hand, once you have understood the trick, these guys seem frankly not smart, and you wonder why they perpetually keep the same rhythm and do not panic when you finally manage to get close to knock them out.Over time, several variants of this species have appeared, such as the Pyro Brothers or the Boomerang Brothers. The Marto Brothers are sometimes considered elite soldiers in Bowser's army, but elite in an army of morons that perpetually reproduces the same plan, that doesn't mean much. What is certain is that n is faced with characters with comic potential.

#11 Lakitu

Lakitu is the unbearable passive-aggressive character of the Mario games. For those who don't know who he is, he is a character who appeared in the first Super Mario Bros game.on the NES. It is a Koopa who wears a pair of round black glasses, a green shell with red stripes and who is always extremely smiling, moving on a cloud which is also smiling.Except that this duo of psychopaths throws Hériss (red turtles covered in spikes and impossible to kill without fireballs) at you while keeping his smile. Basically, Lakitu is the HR guy who tells you that you are fired without compensation, but who will organize a great leaving party for you. However, Lakitu is also a potentially complex and hard to understand character, since he is the one who kindly comes to pick you up in the ditch when you go off the track in Mario Kart. In short, Lakitu is a character with real comic potential, and we would love to see him interact with Bowser/Jack Black.

#10 Cackletta

Super Mario Bros the movie has totally embraced the fantasy aspect of the story. The plot is about kingdoms, “dragons” who want to marry princesses, monkey kingdoms that must be won over to your cause, etc. In fact, and logically, the next film should normally continue in this direction. However, in the Mario lore, there are different games that borrow narrative elements from role-playing games and stories related to the fantasy genre. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey clearly make this fantasy movement an integral part of the franchise. DIn these adventures, the big baddie is Cackletta.

Although her past is unknown, we know that Cackletta lost her mind and became the witchand the sworn enemy of the Bean World. She is a completely unpredictable and dangerous character who even forces Bowser to team up with Mario and Luigi. Using such a character would create a new dynamic in this sequel and develop the lore by allowing us to discover a whole new kingdom.

#9 Bowletta

Okay, here, we're cheating a little since Bowletta is actually the fusion of Bowser and Cackletta, which we were talking about just before. However, if we are going to develop this villain, we might as well go all the way. Especially since imagining all the things Jack Black would have at his fingertips to have fun with the character is mind-blowing. Bowletta also has the advantage of being a particularly grotesque character, both in his form and in his actions, since he is stupid enough to mistake Luigi and his mustache for a princess.

#8 Bowser's Terrors

When these characters appeared in Super Mario Bros 3,Their youthful appearance and the rattles they manipulate led the public to think that they were Bowser's children; which is absolutely not the case. Bowser's Terrors are actually members of the Bowser Army's general staff. Later, they became recurring bosses in the Mario franchise, and even playable characters in certain games (notably in the Mario Kart or Mario Party franchises.). These characters, both cute and completely stupid, could perfectly be introduced in this sequel. Their troop is a bit reminiscent of Freezer's Ginyu commando in Dragon Ball Z and could be as good comic springs as exciting adversaries to discover in the adventure.

#7 Bowser Junior

And yes, we sometimes forget, but since the unloved GameCube installment, Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser now has an only son. Just like his father, he only thinks about capturing Princess Peach. After this first appearance, he continues to help his father conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, but also the universe in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. However, the fact is that Some elements of the Mario Galaxy saga were already introduced in the first film. The character is not necessarily the most interesting in the games; however, it would be fun to see Bowser justifying the existence of this first child within the lore.

#6 Princess Rosalina

Princess Rosalina is a newer character compared to the other characters on this list, but she has gained a strong fanbase since her debut in Super Mario Galaxy. Rosalina lives in space with her adopted children, the Lumas. In Super Mario Galaxy,Rosalina is a mysterious and powerful figure who uses the Comet Observatory to travel across the universe. Mario also uses an Observatory to travel to different planets in Super Mario Galaxy, which could be an interesting plot point for the next film. On the other hand, the The presence of Lumalee in the first film, which is precisely a Luma captured by Bowser, makes the presence of Princess Rosalina totally conceivable.

#5 Waluigi

Waluigi is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and unknown characters in the Mario universe. Created to accompany Wario in games like Mario Tennis, he embodies a mischievous and devious version of the character Luigi With his slender silhouette, his purple hat and his devilish smile, Waluigi has managed to earn a place in the hearts of fans, although his status as a “secondary character” sometimes makes him invisible. His appearances in sports and karting games give him undeniable comedic potential, which could be exploited in the next film. His inclusioncould bring a fun dynamic and a bit of chaos to the plot.

#4 Wario

Wario, the antithesis of Mario, is a character who combines greed and humor. Already well established in Nintendo lore, he was first introduced in Super Mario Land 2 as the main villain, and he has since evolved into an iconic figure in his own right. His grumpy temperament and flamboyant personality make him a protagonist who is both endearing and irritating. In the upcoming film, Wario could bring a touch of irreverence, playing the role of both anti-hero and unpredictable ally. Whether competing with Mario to capture Princess Peach or seeking to accumulate riches at his expense, Wario has the potential to create memorable and hilarious moments, while enriching the Mario lore with his offbeat humor and shenanigans.

#3 Professor Karl Tastroff

Even if they are not at the heart of the film, the universe of the Luigi's Mansion games was touched upon in the first film. All in all, these extremely successful sequences are among the best moments of the film. As a result, it is difficult not to want to see this aspect of the lore developed. With this in mind, the best way to move forward in this direction would be to introduce the character of Professor Karl Tastroff. He is indeed the one who guides and helps Luigi in these games, and his deeply strange and offbeat aspect could be a perfect addition to the team of plumbers of the Mushroom Kingdom.

#2 Mr. Game & Watch

Mr. Game & Watch is a bit like Mario's ancestor. In most of the old games in Nintendo's Game & Watch line, this humanoid character was the hero of most of the early games. It was even him, and not Mario, who faced Donkey Kong in this version of the game. Since then, this silhouette character has made his return to the Nintendo universe by appearing in cameos in Donkey Kong Country Returns, WarioWare: Touched!, Rhythm Heaven Fever, Nintendo 3DS Sound, Super Mario Odyssey, he has also become an amiibo and had already had the right to a little wink during one of the first sequences of the first film. While it would be difficult to include this character in the plot, when Keegan-Michael Key talks about “old iconic figures” and “forgotten gems,” it's hard not to immediately think of such a character.

#1 Sonic the Hedgehog

As we know, Sonic the Hedgehog is not a character from the Mario universe. However, the two heroes have already had the opportunity to cross paths through several crossovers of the series Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. While Sonic typically operates in his own distinct universe, the two franchises have managed to find each other through these collaborations. What makes the idea even more interesting is that, just like the movie Super Mario, who hails from New York, the Sonic from the movies operates in the real world. So why not imagine an unexpected meeting between the two heroes in Super Mario Bros. The Movie 2? After all, with bridges being built between different video game universes and film adaptations, anything seems possible now. This would be a great nod to fans of both franchises, and could even open the door to new, even crazier joint adventures.
