US President Joe Biden is determined to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage deal with Hamas. The president is seeking to reduce tensions on Israel's border with Lebanon. This was stated on Tuesday, September 24, by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Reuters reports.

As Sullivan explained, during his communication with foreign leaders gathered in New York, the head of the White House will continue efforts to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza and the prevention of an all-out war in the Middle East.

The presidential national security adviser noted that it will not be easy to achieve the consent of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar to a compromise. He emphasized that Hamas and, in particular, Sinwar, “do not want to make an agreement.”

“However, we intend to continue working,” Sullivan said.

The United States is seeking to contain the growth of tensions in the Middle East. As Sullivan explained, since the Hamas attack on Israel almost a year ago, the conflict with Hezbollah on Israel's northern border has been erupting and flaring, and is now gaining momentum.

“But we have prevented it during previous moments of escalation, and I believe that we can still find a way forward to achieve de-escalation… between Israel and Lebanon and come to a diplomatic solution that will allow people to return home,” the presidential national security adviser said.
