Storm forecast this weekend will bring heavy snow to southern Manitoba

This weekend's storm may bring freezing rain, blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of a severe snowstorm that is set to hit southern Manitoba this weekend. Snowfall is expected to begin Saturday evening.

The federal weather agency warns that snow could turn into freezing rain and rain in southern portions -eastern part of the province, including the Red River Valley.

This special weather warning mainly affects the city of Winnipeg and Poplar River.

Environment Canada adds that west and north of the Red River Valley, significant accumulations of 20 to 30 cm could be recorded.

The storm is also likely to bring some rumbles of thunder, the weather agency said.

Environment Canada warns of strong winds with gusts up to 60 mph could result in blowing snow Saturday night and Sunday and will result in low visibility. Unnecessary travel is discouraged.

The weather agency indicates that the exact path of this system is uncertain.

As a result, the locations of snow, freezing rain, and rain are uncertain and will become clearer as the system approaches.
