Star Wars characters in ukiyo-e style to discover urgently

From April 18 to 20, the Star Wars Celebration will take place in Japan, and for the occasion, the designer TAKUMI has taken the characters of this universe to imagine them in an ukiyo-e style. This term, which means “image of the floating world”, represents an artistic movement from the Edo period(between the 17th and 19th centuries) mainly including woodcut prints. This Tuesday, October 8, StarWars.com revealed 5 of the 17 illustrations that will be featured on the event badges. We can see Master Yoda, Ahsoka, Mando & Grogu, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader superbly drawn in combat or meditation positions, against a backdrop of dark nights, full moons and cherry blossoms.

Born in the Hokkaido region, TAKUMI began his career as an illustrator after winning the Weekly Shonen JUMP Rookie Award in 2012. He has previously collaborated with Disney on illustrations for Thor: Love & Thunder and the third season of The Mandalorian. A Star Wars enthusiast, the artist seized the opportunity to pay homage to the saga's Japanese roots:

I vividly remember being amazed by the design and coolness of the Star Wars toys that my friends' brothers had. As I explored further, I discovered that Star Wars was deeply influenced by Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa, one of the films that had the most impact on me.

What do you think of these prints?
