Star Wars: George Lucas has his share of responsibility for the flop of this Disney film

With Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, the Star Wars franchise has been exploited both in cinema and on television with a plethora of series for Disney+. The studio has had to face a lot of criticism, but it turns out that it is not solely responsible for this film considered as one of the worst in the saga: George Lucas is no stranger to it. width: 451px)” srcset=”https://static.hitek.fr/img/up_m/69378543/starwarsgeorgelucasresponsableechecfilmdisney.webp” type=”image/webp”>

Disney heavily criticized for the exploitation of the Star Wars franchise

Since Disney took over Lucasfilm, the Star Wars franchise has been exploited or even overexploited. As proof, in the space of four years, fans have been treated to five films and a dozen series for Disney+. The big-eared company has had its ups with Episode VII The Force Awakenswhich brought in more than 2 billion at the box office and lows … like with this film which is one of the worst of the saga.

If Disney is targeted first as the one responsible for the box office flop of this Star Wars film, it would seem that Mickey's company is not the only one responsible.

In 2016, Disney offered fans the project A Star Wars Story with a first spin-off entitled Rogue One which had managed the feat of exceeding the billion dollar mark at the box office for a budget of 265 million dollars. Except that with Solo, another spin-off devoted to the youth of the famous smuggler, the studio failed to repeat this performance. Solo was a dismal failure at the box office. With an official budget of almost 300 million, the production only brought in than 393 million dollars after its exploitation.

George Lucas is also responsible for the Solo fiasco

For many, this film is the perfect illustration of Disney's bad choices as well as the abusive exploitation of the Star Wars brand.. Many people are directly targeting the studio as the one responsible for the Solo fiasco. Except that Stuart Beattie, screenwriter of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, revealed that George Lucas also had his share of responsibility for this flop.

Interviewed by the YouTube channel Star Wars Theory, he claims that Lucas and Kasdan, the co-writer of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, were already developing this project on Han Solo before Disney came along:

He was partly involved in Solo, because he was the one who started it. George went to Larry (Lawrence Kasdan) and said, 'Hey, let's make a movie, choose what you want,' and he chose Han Solo, that's why Lucasfilm made the Han Solo movie. Because he was already in development when they bought Lucasfilm from George.

Ultimately, you can criticize Disney, but Lucas also has his responsibility in the failure of Solo which led to the end of the A Star Wars Story series.
