Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield reveals his favorite Peter Parker, fans criticize him

Last week, we shared this statement from actor Andrew Garfield who revealed whether he planned to return as Peter Parker in the MCU. And more recently, the Hollywood star revealed his favorite Spider-Man, a choice that was not unanimous among fans.

Spider-Man is most certainly one of the most iconic superheroes in the Marvel universe. This is why the character has had different interpretations in the cinema, each having more or less marked his generation. The oldest will think of Nicholas Hammond's version from the late 1970s, while one of the most cult remains that of Tobey Maguire in the famous Sam Raimi trilogy from the 2000s.

Fans were then able to discover Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker in the films The Amazing Spider-Man, and the latest iteration of the Skywalker has been Tom Holland's in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since Captain America: Civil War (2016). The last three incarnations of the hero were reunited on screen in 2021 in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home, allowing us to see the different Spidey interpreters from the last two decades together in the same universe.

And while some people often wonder which version of Peter Parker is the best, it was Garfield who recently had to answer a question of this kind. Indeed, during an interview with Vanity Fair for the promotion of the film We Live in Time, the actor was asked the following question: who is his favorite actor who has played Spider-Man?

After a rather amusing exchange with Florence Pugh (with whom he shares the bill in his new film), Garfield finally responded with this:

Tobey was my guy. I was in drama school and I would watch his movies when I was a pretty impressionable young actor and practice being him. But Tom did a great job, too. I love them both equally. But because it was a formative moment in my life, I think Tobey is still “my Spider-Man,” “he's the Spider-Man I grew up with” […]. But Tom has my admiration. I'm not going to choose. TobYom!

Although Garfield did not want to choose between his two colleagues, it is understandable that he has more affection for his predecessor who was a great source of inspiration for him. But if his rather bland response provoked strong reactions from Internet users, it is because some fans believe that the actor forgot other notable interpreters of the Web Weaver, in particular those who lent their voices to the character in other projects, like the animated films.

As reported by the Daily Mail, this is in response to the excerpt from the interview published on TikTok that we can see some fans mentioning Jake Johnson, the voice actor who plays Peter B. Parker in the original version of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023).

We can also see the name of Yuri Lowenthal, who voices the superhero in the video games Marvel's Spider-Man, the standalone Miles Morales as well as Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
