Slovenia became the latest European country to recognize an independent Palestinian state after its parliament approved the move by a majority vote, Reuters reports.
Last week, the Slovenian government decided to recognize Palestine as an independent and sovereign state within the broader efforts to coordinate pressure on Israel to end the conflict in Gaza.
Earlier, a similar decision was made by Spain, Ireland and Norway.
"Today's recognition of Palestine as sovereign and independent state gives hope to the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza,”– said Prime Minister Robert Golob on the social network X.
The right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party, the largest opposition party in the country, said that now is not the right time to recognize an independent Palestinian state, and that this step will only benefit ” terrorist organization Hamas.”
