An American B-1B long-range bomber flew over the Korean Peninsula as part of the first joint exercise with South Korea in seven years to use precision guided bombs.

< p>This was reported by the South Korean military, reports the Voice of America.

The exercises, which are supposed to be a demonstration of the strength of North Korea, are taking place against the backdrop of increasing tensions in the region.

In the exercises modern American and South Korean fighters are involved.

B-1B bomber – the second bomber to temporarily deploy over the Korean Peninsula this year.

The exercise is intended to demonstrate the U.S. commitment to ensuring South Korea's security and strengthening the allied joint defense system, the South Korean Defense Ministry said.

In During the exercise, a B-1B bomber dropped munitions equipped with JDAM kits that turn free-falling bombs into guided bombs.

At the same time, the aircraft was escorted by South Korean fighters. This is the first such bombing exercise involving a US bomber since 2017, the ministry said in a statement.

The document notes that South Korean fighter jets also conducted live-fire exercises to demonstrate the country's readiness to punish North Korea if provocations.
