Security threat: why Ukrainians should think twice about using the social network TikTok

TikTok, one of the world's most popular social networks, recently stopped working in the United States. This was the result of disturbing allegations about the dangers of this application. For Ukrainians who use TikTok every day, it is also worth thinking about the potential risks and threats, especially in conditions of war and aggravated relations with an aggressor country.

What are the dangers of TikTok?

  1. Collection of personal data. TikTok actively collects user data: location, history of application use, contacts, information about devices. This opens up opportunities for surveillance and manipulation.

  2. Influence through algorithms. TikTok algorithms shape the video feed in a way that keeps the user's attention while promoting certain topics. This may include disinformation, propaganda, or politically motivated content that could influence public opinion.

  3. The app is of Chinese origin. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company based in China. China has close ties with Russia, particularly in the economic and technological spheres. This raises questions about data security, as the Chinese government can access user information, including Ukrainian citizens.

Why this is important for Ukrainians?

Ukraine is in a state of war, and information security is extremely important. Using apps that can transfer data to third parties potentially poses a risk to citizens and the state. In addition, there is a threat that TikTok could be used to spread pro-Russian propaganda that could destabilize society.

TikTok Alternatives

Ukrainian users should consider TikTok alternatives that have more transparent privacy policies, such as Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. These platforms offer similar features but are subject to stricter regulations in Europe and the US.

What TikTok users should do?

  1. Restrict the app's access to personal data through privacy settings.
  2. Avoid posting sensitive information.
  3. Monitor app security updates.
  4. Consider deleting TikTok if you feel at risk.

TikTok can be a source of entertainment, but users should be aware of its risks. Especially now, in times of war, it is worth being careful with platforms that can use your data for dubious purposes. Information security — is another front on which Ukrainians must be ready to fight.
