The company LG Chem has developed a new material that can make the operation of lithium-ion batteries twice as efficient.  The material, known as Safety Reinforced Layer (SRL), is so thin that its thickness is only 1 micrometer — approximately 100 times thinner than a human hair. The main task of SRL — prevent the risk of thermal runaway, which is the main cause of fires and explosions in lithium-ion batteries, writes Intersting Engineering.

The material acts as an intelligent fuse: at normal operating temperatures, it allows electricity to flow freely. However, when the temperature of the battery rises to dangerous levels, SRL reacts by changing its molecular structure, blocking the flow of current and preventing thermal runaway. , equipped with SRL, did not catch fire even under puncture conditions. LG Chem plans to continue testing for more powerful batteries, including those used in electric cars.
