SBU employee facilitated illegal cryptocurrency mining in Ukraine

On Wednesday, November 27, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court (SAC) found an employee of the Security Service of Ukraine guilty of extorting $60,000 for facilitating cryptocurrency mining activities. The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison, confiscation of property, and deprivation of the military rank of «colonel».
The convict demanded a bribe for the return of seized equipment related to the illegal use of electricity, as well as for not obstructing the cryptocurrency mining business. In July 2022, he was detained «red» while receiving funds.
The court's decision provides for:
- Imprisonment for 10 years.
- Ban from holding positions in law enforcement agencies for three years.
- Confiscation of crypto assets worth over $ 58 000, which were stored in multicurrency crypto wallets.
- Deprivation of military rank.
According to the message of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the sentence can be appealed within 30 days.
