Saab will supply Lithuania with more MSHORAD mobile air defense systems

Swedish defense company Saab received an additional order from Lithuania for Mobile Short-Range Air Defense (MSHORAD) solutions worth SEK 1.2 billion ($116 million).

The order expands on an initial agreement signed in July 2024, with deliveries scheduled for 2026-2029.

This latest contract involves equipping the second battery of the Lithuanian armed forces with the Saab mobile air defense system.

The Lithuanian government sees the acquisition as an important step in strengthening the country's military defense:

"The acquisition of the mobile short-range air defense system (MSHORAD) will strengthen the ability of the Lithuanian army to resist potential enemy air attacks. The advantage of this system is its mobility, which makes it a very necessary system for Lithuania», – said Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Laurinas Kaščiūnas.

The contract includes mobile fire units, mobile radar units and a control system (C2). Saab is integrating the MSHORAD system into Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) manufactured by US defense contractor Oshkosh prior to delivery.

The Saab MSHORAD solution combines several important components:

• mobile radar based on the Giraffe 1X radar;
• mobile fire unit equipped with RBS 70 NG missile system;
• GBAD C2 system for command and control of ground air defense means.

Together, these elements create a mobile and fast-reacting air defense capability capable of countering a range of air threats.
