Russian government supports fines for “childfree propaganda”

The Russian government supported the bill on introducing punishment for “propaganda of the refusal to have children” (childfree – voluntarily childless or free from children) – by analogy with “LGBT propaganda”.

For disseminating neutral or positive information about childfree people, Russians will face a fine of up to one hundred thousand rubles, legal entities – a fine of up to one million rubles and a suspension of work for three months. If the information is intended for minors and is distributed via the Internet or the media, the fines will double. And if it is for minors and via the Internet, the fines will quadruple, Radio Liberty reports.

According to officials, the initiative is “aimed at preserving and strengthening traditional values and creating an effective mechanism for their protection.”

The author of the bill banning “childfree propaganda” was State Duma deputy from United Russia Elvira Aitkulova. She is 51 years old, has two daughters and a granddaughter. Aitkulova forbade negative reactions to her posts on Telegram, including those with the hashtag NetChildfree.

A number of high-ranking Russian leaders, including the head of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, have previously spoken out in favor of banning the so-called childfree propaganda. Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin has no definite opinion on this matter, but stressed that everything that hinders the increase in the birth rate must be eliminated.
