Rumors spread on Chinese social media that iPhones can explode like Hezbollah pagers – CNN

This is reported by CNN.

In particular, a video from 2011 went viral on Chinese social networks, where an old iPhone model explodes during testing by a blogger. Content creators are using the video to spread unsubstantiated comparisons to the explosion of hundreds of pocket pagers in Lebanon and rumors that American smartphones can be remotely detonated.

The author of the original video, the American YouTube blogger Chris Boden, said that the iPhone was then connected to high-voltage equipment.

«In order to make such a small iPhone explode, we needed a source of power larger than a refrigerator, and a weight in half a ton», — he explained.

Some Chinese state media have tried to deny the rumors, but they are spreading fast. In particular, commentators suggested using Chinese-made equipment to "protect their lives".

What is known about the mass explosion of pagers?

September 17 across Lebanon. and hundreds of pocket pagers exploded almost simultaneously in some areas of Syria. At least eight people were killed, including members of the Hezbollah group. It is also known about more than 2,700 wounded.

Earlier the leader of "Hezbollah" Hassan Nasrallah warned members of the group not to carry cellphones, saying Israel could use them to track movements and launch targeted strikes.

After the blasts, an unnamed spokesman for the group said the blasts were the result of a “security operation aimed at against devices”. The official blamed Israel for the attack and suggested that lithium batteries in the pagers may have exploded.

Official Beirut also suspects Israel of the attack. Thus, the Minister of Information of Lebanon, Ziad Makari, emphasized that his country condemns "Israeli aggression" after pager explosions.
