Romanian Foreign Minister Luminica Odobescu said that the European Union should consider how to use the tools at the EU's disposal to counter Russia's “increasingly aggressive” hybrid activities.
She said this before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, reports “European Pravda”.
Odobescu said the meeting should consider how the EU can use existing tools to counter Russia's increasingly aggressive hybrid activities.
She stressed that these hybrid activities are aimed at influencing democratic societies and aim to “demonstrate distrust in institutions, create confusion, discord, interfere in elections or manipulate public opinion”.
Odobescu noted that online campaigns and cyber technologies are used to influence the democratic electoral process.
“This is something we are all vulnerable to, and we should think together about how we can use EU tools to address this important issue”, – summed up the head of the Romanian Foreign Ministry.
Recall that recently the Constitutional Court of Romania recognized the first round of the presidential elections as valid, where the anti-Western candidate Calin Georgescu sensationally won, after which voting in the second round even began at polling stations abroad.
However, on December 6, the Constitutional Court, after an urgent meeting, annulled the results of the first round in the context of receiving many new requests with such a call and having familiarized itself with information from the special services.
The requests referred to documents declassified by the Supreme Council of National Defense, according to which the campaign of the pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu was the result of organized manipulation from abroad.
