When Irena heard her neighbor shout that her daughter Lidka had returned, she was overcome with emotion.

Lidka had always been an unconventional girl, preferring boys' games to dolls, and growing up without a father, a notorious womanizer who probably had many other children. After finishing school, Lidka went to work as a cook on a geological expedition, driven by a desire to escape the vicious cycle of their small town.
