Real Life. “My Sister-in-Law Is Jealous of Me”: She Ruined My Gift from Husband

I have always believed that family bonds are the strongest. All family members should help and support each other, no matter what.

But my opinion changed when my husband's younger brother married Beata. This girl came from a wealthy family. She studied in London and was very proud of it. However, her good education and connections did not help her get a prestigious job.

She clearly believed that her father's business would eventually be taken over by her, so she did not put much effort into it. When we first met Beata, she spoke to me with a superior attitude. She was only interested in two points of my biography: what my parents did and where I studied. Apparently I failed the test.

My parents worked as teachers in a regular school, and I graduated from a pedagogical college in our city. In my case, there was no question of elitism. However, Beata actively talked about how she accidentally met Elton John in London and got into a private party with world stars. I don't know what attracted her to Bartek, but they got married a few months later. The wedding was almost entirely paid for by the bride's father, which she regularly reminded her husband of.

I didn't want to go to this ceremony at all, but my husband insisted that we take part in it. Honestly, I've never seen more fake fun. The bride hugged, kissed and talked only with her parents, bridesmaids and the photographer. After the wedding she behaved the same.

On all holidays, she would either go to her parents or friends, or take Bartek with her. He would just throw up his hands and say that he didn't want to argue with his wife. A few years passed. Beata's father invested in the construction of two large facilities, but as it turned out, he fell into the hands of fraudsters. As a result, he had to sell everything, including his business and real estate. He was left with only a two-story residence and one car. Then Laura “remembered” that her husband had relatives.

She started visiting her father-in-law and mother-in-law more often. It so happened that at the same time that Bartek's father-in-law's business went bankrupt, my husband's sales began to grow. He became involved in the acquisition of rolled metal products and organizing the supply of stainless steel abroad.

My husband started spending more time at work, but his eyes were burning, and I realized that he was coming true. The holiday of March 8 was approaching. We decided to celebrate it with my parents. And it was Beata's idea. She even brought balloons and a few bouquets of flowers to decorate the living room. Recently, this aphid pleasantly surprised me. There is no trace of her arrogance anymore. We all decided that the saying: “Money spoils people” best describes the changes that had taken place in Beata. From a haughty megalomaniac, she changed into a cheerful and simple girl.

We prepared salads together for Women's Day, cut sausage and cheese, laughed. It even seemed to me that Beata and I were old friends. She began to mention the achievements of her rich life less often and increasingly asked me how my husband Piotr was doing and what he was doing now. Without any modesty, I told her about the increase in our income and the difficulties that my husband and I had overcome together.

I regret that I did not perceive Beata's questions as jealousy rather than interest. My mother-in-law told me that she was a two-faced person when we were in the kitchen. It turned out that my mother-in-law had overheard Beata's telephone conversation, and she had decided to ambush my Piotr and seduce him in order to have a new source of income — at my and Bartek's expense.

Women's Day ended very happily for me, because my husband gave me a new, red car, a “Jaguar”, which I didn't dare to dream of. The next day, however, it turned out that “someone” had left a terrible scratch around the car, scratching the paint off with a nail down to the sheet metal. My husband asked me not to make a fuss, so I let it go this time…
