Real Life. “My Sister Cut Me Off”: Accusing Me of Manipulating Our Parents to Get a Bigger Inheritance

It started with conversations about the future of our parents.

My sister, Karolina, has always been my best friend. We shared everything – secrets, dreams, and even the hardest moments. I never thought that anything could tear us apart. But all it took was one accusation to tear our relationship apart.

It all started with conversations about my parents' future. Mom and Dad were already elderly and their health was starting to fail. Karolina and I tried to support them, but each of us had a different approach. I lived closer, so most of the responsibilities fell on me – doctor's visits, shopping, cleaning. Karolina, although she tried to help, often didn't have time for it, living in another city.

When my parents started talking about the inheritance, I assured them that they didn't have to worry about it. The most important thing for me was for them to be happy and calm. But Karolina, as it turned out later, saw things differently.

One day she called me, and her voice was icy.

– „I wanted to tell you that I know what you're doing.”

I was confused.

– „What are you talking about, Karolina?”

– „Don't pretend. I know you manipulate your parents to transfer everything to yourself. You spend more time with them, you do everything to make it seem like you're the only one taking care of them. But I'm not stupid.”

Her words were like a punch straight to the heart. I always thought Karolina trusted me, that she knew how much I loved our parents.

– „Karolina, that's not true! I would never do something like that! I take care of them because they need it, not for the inheritance.”

– „That's what you say. But I see what's happening. I don't want to have anything to do with you.”

Before I could answer, she hung up.

For the next few days I felt like my world had fallen on my head. I tried to call her, write her, but she didn't answer. When she visited her parents, she did so when I was away, avoiding me like the plague. The worst thing was that my parents didn't know what was going on. They were too busy with their health to notice the tension between us.

I decided to talk to my mom. We sat down at the table together, and I told her everything.

– „Mom, Karolina thinks I'm manipulating you to get a bigger inheritance. I don't know where she got that idea from, but you have to believe me– I would never do something like that.”
Mom looked at me with pain in her eyes.

– „Ania, I don't understand where her suspicions come from. But you have to know that we've always wanted you to be treated equally. We'll do everything to make it so.”

Although Mom's words brought me relief, they didn't solve the problem. Karolina kept avoiding me, and I didn't know how to rebuild our relationship. Finally, I decided to write her a letter in which I expressed everything I felt – pain, disappointment, but also love and longing for my sister, whom I had always considered my soulmate.

After weeks of silence, I got a response from her. There was more anger than understanding, but at least she had responded. She wrote that she felt pushed into the background, that she had always felt that my parents favored me, and now she was afraid that she would be left with nothing.

I understood then that her accusations were not based on greed, but on a sense of injustice and fear. I decided to talk to her face to face. The meeting was difficult, full of emotions and tears, but it allowed us to understand each other.

Today our relationship is delicate, but we are slowly rebuilding the bond that was destroyed. I have learned that even in a family, where love and trust should reign, cracks can appear. But if both parties are ready to talk and work on the relationship, there is a chance that these cracks will not become an abyss.
