Real Life. “My Own Daughter Didn't Want to Invite Me to Her Wedding”: It Was Her New Family's Fault

We have a simple but close-knit family, or rather it was until my daughter met her fiancé.

My husband died after a long illness a few years ago, and my oldest daughter and her family lived in Germany. I can't say we were poor. I worked in a clothing factory as a forewoman. My income was average. I have no debts. I tried to surround my daughter with care and attention.

Julia's chosen one was the son of the head of a large enterprise in our regional center. A few months later he took my daughter out of the house. With a heavy heart I explained to her that it was too soon, that I hadn't even met his parents, my daughter, who was already packing her suitcase, simply waved at me: “Oh, Mom, you're so old-fashioned. Everything's different these days. You'll meet later. It's a forty-minute drive to the city. One day you'll come and meet us. And we'll come to you.”

In the first days after leaving, my daughter called me often. She was delighted with the apartment she was living in with her future husband. At first, they came several times a month. I visited them once, but then I noticed that my daughter was pulling away from me. She started talking more and more about her future mother-in-law. About how they went out together. About how she helped my daughter choose clothes and jewelry. New Year was coming up and we planned to celebrate it together. Julia and her fiancé were coming to visit me on January 31, and on New Year's Eve we planned to call our oldest daughter by video to be together.

A few days before New Year's Eve, my daughter called me and said, “Mom, you know that on New Year's Eve, we're going to a restaurant with the whole family. Our plans have changed a bit. Don't be offended. The whole family… Who am I then?? Those words really hurt me. I replied, “What about me?? I'm all alone,” but my daughter had already lost all interest in the conversation. I could hear her talking to someone about the menu. She said that I had so many friends that I shouldn't be alone. Of course, I felt bad, but that seemed like a minor thing compared to what happened next.

My daughter's wedding was approaching. I prepared for this event like no other. I bought an expensive dress and shoes. I chose my hairstyle. The girls at work were a little jealous of me. The wedding was in a nice restaurant, rich relatives, but that was the last thing on my mind. I was happy for my daughter. I wanted to see her in a white dress, happy.

She called me a few weeks before the wedding: “Mom, there's a situation. You and Aunt Sabinka won't come to the wedding. The restaurant will be full of the elite, your father-in-law's business partners. Generally speaking, you'll feel uncomfortable there. Then we'll come to your place after everything and spend time together at home.”

I didn't know what to say. I felt devastated and hurt. But I didn't push my daughter away. I let her visit me with her husband, but I felt that nothing between us would ever be the same again…
