Something was wrong.
My wedding was supposed to be the most beautiful day of my life. Everything was planned perfectly – flowers, music, guests. In my white dress, I felt like a princess, ready to start a new chapter with the man I loved. Among the crowd of smiling faces was also her – my best friend Ania. She had been with me for years, supporting me in difficult times, and today she was to witness my happiness.
But something was wrong.
I had noticed from the morning that Krzysztof, my future husband, was restless. He kept looking at his phone, avoiding my gaze. “It's just stress,” I told myself, although my heart told me something was wrong.
During the ceremony in the church, he held my hand, but he seemed absent. As we exchanged vows, his voice trembled in a way that didn’t sound like emotion. After the ceremony, at the reception, his strange behavior began to intensify. He kept disappearing—sometimes into the kitchen, sometimes outside, sometimes in an “urgent conversation” with someone on the phone.
Ania, as always, was smiling and radiant. “Don't worry,” she said when I pointed out Krzysztof's absence. “It's normal, guys always get stressed at times like these.” Her words calmed me down, but only for a moment.
The climax was Krzysztof's disappearance just before the cake was cut. The guests were already waiting, the music was fading, and I was standing alone in front of the table, feeling the tension growing inside me. Where was he? ? I started looking for him, asking the staff, my parents, my friends. Finally, I decided to look at the back of the room, where there was a small garden.
What I saw took my breath away.
Krzysztof stood there with Ania. Their faces were too close together, and his hand was resting on her waist. I could only hear fragments of the conversation: “I don't know what to do… This is all so hard…” he said in a whisper. And she, with the same smile I'd seen for years, replied: “You have to end this. But not today.”
I stepped closer, not feeling my feet. “What's going on here?– I asked, and my voice trembled more than I would have liked.
They both jumped away from each other as if burned. Krzysztof tried to say something, but Ania was faster. “It's not what you think,” she began, but her words sounded like a pathetic excuse.
“Not what I think?” I exclaimed. “So how? You're my best friend, you were supposed to be with me on this day, and now I see you with my husband!”
Krzysztof was silent, looking at the ground. His silence said it all. “How long has this been going on?” I asked quietly, struggling to catch my breath.
“A half year” Ania admitted, not looking down. Her voice was devoid of emotion, as if she hadn't just shattered my world into tiny pieces.
“A half year…” I repeated, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. A half year of lies, betrayals, cheating. Everything I believed in disappeared in an instant.
I turned around and ran out of the garden without looking back. I went back into the hall, where the guests were still waiting for the cake. Everyone was looking at me, and I couldn't hold back the tears. “I'm sorry,” I said, grabbing the microphone. “The wedding is over. Just like my marriage was before it even started.”
That day, I packed my things and went to my parents'. Krzysztof tried to call, explain, but I didn't want to listen to him. Ania? She never spoke to me again.
Today, looking back at those events, I know one thing – true love does not begin with a lie. And true friendship does not end with betrayal. My life fell apart that day, but I rebuilt it, stronger than ever. I understood that sometimes you have to lose everything to find yourself.
